Don’t forget that on Dec. 13th we will be hosting our Family Literacy Night. Sue Black, local storyteller, will be presenting in our main gym at 7:00, but join us at 6:00 in the LMC for quiet reading time with your family and book making using a Klutz Build-a-Book kit. At 6:45 we’ll assemble in the gym to be ready for the storytelling to begin at 7:00. We hope you can join us!

Spring Brook’s fall book fair will be arriving in mid-October. It’s a great time to get some early holiday shopping done! We have parent only times on Monday, Oct. 22.

Below is the schedule for that week:

Oct. 19 students will come window shop, fill out wish lists
Oct. 22 open 8:30-5:30 (parent only time 11:15-11:45, 3-3:30)
Oct. 23 open 8:30-5:30
Oct. 24 open 8:30-10:30

Subject…: Parent Child Book Club Summer Reading

This summer, the Parent Child Book Club read two great books. In July, we read and discussed The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It was about Huck Finn’s adventures on the Mississippi River with his friend Jim, a former slave. Huck and Jim fished to catch their own food, built fires to cook and keep warm and met all kinds of people during their travels. We learned that we could have the same kind of adventrues when Steve and Tom B. told us about their upcoming trip to Yellowstone National Forest. They were going to camp under the stars, catch fish and hike miles and miles. What great text to self comments! By the way, since the book is geared towards the older grades, our younger participants picked abridged versions that matched their reading levels. Good thinking!

In August, we read a biography of Walt Disney. The selected book was Walt Disney, Young Movie Maker by Marie Hammontree. Some participants read that book, while others read on of the many different biographies of Walt Disney available at the Naperville Public Library. Again, participants were able to pick a book that was just right for them. From these many books, we learned that Walt Disney started drawing cartoons as a small child. He practiced over and over again, even using both sides of his art paper and the side of a barn, to perfect his drawing skills. The children all could relate because they practice for sports or in school — especially their printing and cursive. We also learned that Walt Disney’s first business venture failed. Walt Disney said that failure was a good teacher. What did that mean? The kids said it meant to try, try and try again and that mistakes are opportunities to learn or to learn from your mistakes. We’ve all read these sayings in o
ther books. These are great text to text comparisons. Finally, we talked about trips to Disney amusement parks. Antonio M. and Gabrielle and Alex P. told us about vacations they had taken. It seems that everyone loves the rides, especially if they spin and move fast.

I am excited that so many kids are reading, and that they also have taken the time to submit their reviews for other kids to read on our LMC Blog. Please feel free to continue to post your reviews throughout the year, and I will post them for others to read.

Parents (and students too)- Do you feel like this blog was a success this summer? What else would you like to see on the blog? Any ideas to improve it? I want to hear them! Reply to this post so I can see and incorporate your ideas.

………………………………………………….In this book Fira has some touble. She is a light talent fairy. The fireflys light up the home tree with their light, but they are sick with colds, and it is a very busy time of year. The light talent fairies have to work harder than ever. Then one day a new fiary came, but instead of one, it was triplets. All three were light talent fairies. when Fira finds out that a full moon was that night she had to help the other talent fairies with their talents. Fira was sleepy, and when they were making their way back, her light was too dim. Fira’s light was too dim to go on. If you want to find out what happens, then you should read, Fira and the Full Moon.

………………………………………………….In this book Rani leaves the home tree. She had an adventure and ended up at Mermaid Lagoon. If she had wings she would have probably sank to the bottom of the lagoon with the other fairies, but she did not. She went and swam with the mermaids. Then Rani decided that the home tree was better, but she also liked living with the mermaids. If you want to find out if Rani returns to the home tree, you should read, Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon.

They were there because a hobby show was going on and Cam’s parents had brought their collection. Cam and Eric were looking around. Then they came to a table about baseball. The man at the table showed Cam and Eric all different baseball cards, but when he turned around to show Cam and Eric the baseball that Babe Ruth signed, it was gone. if you want to find out who stole the baseball, you should read, Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Babe Ruth Baseball.

I read a really great book by a couple that lives in Naperville, Rich and Mary Chamberlin. Mama Panya’s Pancakes is a story from Africa, where they have traveled. It’s a great folktale and the illustrations are beautiful. When you’re done reading it, you feel like you’ve been to Africa…and you have a great recipe for pancakes!

I hope you all have been finding the unbearable heat a nice time to stay indoors or sit by a pool and read a good book. I am just about to finish reading one of the books that our PTA book club will be reading this year, Ruth, By Lake and Prairie by Katherine Kendzy Gingold. It’s a nice piece about a family making their way from Ohio to Naperville and being one of the first families to arrive in Naperville and to settle it. It’s a good historical ficition book. If you are interested in the PTA book club this year, watch for more information to come home, or you can contact Mrs. Patty Cosgrove, the book club leader.

You still have time to submit your reviews to the blog and be entered in the drawing to win a prize. On Cheryl L.’s advice, I read Miracle on 49th St.by Mike Lupica. She told me at least a million times this past school year that I would love this book. I am also interested in his book Heat and now after reading this book I think I will definitely give it Heat a try too. Miracle on 49th St. didn’t disappoint. It tells the story of Molly Parker, who really follows the career of Boston Celtics player Josh Cameron. Her mom, Jen has recently passed away and Molly had moved in with her family friends, the Evanses. Jen has shared with Molly some information that not many people know. Molly has a special reason for following the basketball career of Josh Cameron so closely. He’s her dad. Josh doesn’t know this but Molly persists in making him get to know her. Since Molly’s mom has passed away and there is nobody to tell the truth first hand, she has a little bit of a tough time convincing Josh that she is her daughter and not just some crazy fan trying to get in on the inside life of Josh Cameron. This book was a fast, interesting read. It’s the first time I’ve read any of Mike Lupica’s books, and I don’t think it’ll be my last! Thanks for the tip, Cheryl!

Her friend, Twitter, a hummingbird comes and tells Beck that the chimpmunks keep stealing berries and hiding them away from the hummingbirds. Beck explains why the chimpmunks are taking the berries and hiding them away. Later Twitter comes and tells Beck that there is a berry battle going on between the humingbirds and the chipmunks. All of the animal fairies are trying to make them stop fighting. A lot of other animals are getting tied up in the battle. Will the battle ever end? His uncle is getting married during the most dangerous part of the war and his father, who is divorced from his mother, works for the secret police. This is a very deep book about a boy who has to flee and learns a lot about life.

Over the summer, I read an awesome book called The Junkyard Dog by Erika Tamar. It is about a dog that lives in a junkyard and a girl named Katie. Katie takes care of the dog and names it Lucky because it was lucky to be taken care of by her. Katie winds up wanting to keep Lucky but the apartment building she lives in doesn’t allow pets.
